Mentoring

What mentoring can cover

Common areas in embedded systems projects:

Architecture

  • Project architecture
  • Microcontroller selection
  • Sensors and actuators
  • Device interfacing

Peripherals

  • Digital I/O
  • ADC
  • PWM
  • Timers
  • Interrupts

Communication interfaces

  • UART
  • SPI
  • I2C

Firmware and integration

  • Embedded programming
  • Motor control
  • Hardware/software integration
  • Debugging and troubleshooting
  • Testing

These are common examples rather than a complete list. Tell us about your project and the platform it runs on.

Approach

Where hardware meets firmware

Embedded projects fail at the boundaries. Mentoring focuses on making each connection work:

  1. Choosing the architecture

Deciding which microcontroller, sensors and actuators suit the project, and how the pieces connect.

  2. Configuring peripherals

Setting up GPIO, ADC, PWM and timers from the datasheet, so the hardware does what the firmware expects.

  3. Getting devices talking

Bringing up UART, SPI and I2C links to sensors, displays and modules, one device at a time.

  4. Structuring the firmware

Organising the main loop, interrupts and state so the code stays readable and responsive as features grow.

  5. Integrating hardware and software

Bringing the firmware and the circuit together, and working out whether a fault lives in the code or the wiring.

  6. Testing the system

Checking each function against the requirements, from single peripherals to the complete build.

Software & tools

Platforms and programming

Platforms may include Arduino, ESP32, PIC, AVR and ARM-based boards where appropriate, programmed in C, C++, Embedded C or Assembly where relevant. Common examples:

  • Arduino
  • ESP32
  • PIC Microcontrollers
  • MPLAB
  • Embedded C
  • C Programming
  • C++ Programming
  • Assembly Programming
  • Proteus tutoring
  • AVR
  • ARM-based platforms
  • Other relevant microcontrollers

Support depends on the exact platform. Send us your board, controller and development environment so we can confirm how we can help.

Common embedded project problems

Familiar faults at the hardware and firmware boundary:

  • A sensor that returns nothing, or nonsense, over I2C or SPI
  • Serial output that is garbled or missing
  • Interrupts that fire at the wrong time or not at all
  • PWM or timer settings that do not produce the expected signal
  • Code that works alone but fails once everything is combined
  • Not knowing whether a fault is in the firmware or the circuit

What to send us

Useful details for an embedded systems project:

  • The exact board or microcontroller
  • Your IDE, compiler or software environment
  • The sensors, actuators and modules involved
  • What the project should do
  • What works so far and what does not
  • Code snippets, wiring diagrams or photos, where helpful

Who this mentoring is for

  • Students building a microcontroller-based project for a course or final year
  • Students connecting sensors, displays or motors for the first time
  • Students moving from Arduino-style code to register-level or Embedded C work
  • Students debugging a prototype where the firmware and hardware disagree

FAQ

Embedded Systems project questions

Which microcontrollers and boards can you help with?

Arduino, ESP32 and PIC are common, along with AVR and ARM-based boards where appropriate. Send us your exact board and environment so we can confirm support for your setup.

Can you help me get a sensor working over I2C or SPI?

Yes. We check the wiring, addresses, bus settings and code together, and read the datasheet to see what the device expects.

Can you help with Embedded C or Assembly?

Yes, where relevant to your project — from register-level configuration in Embedded C to understanding Assembly on your target microcontroller.

How do I tell whether a problem is in my code or my circuit?

We work through it step by step — testing peripherals in isolation, checking signals and reviewing the code — until the fault is narrowed down.

Can you help me design the architecture of my embedded project?

Yes. We can talk through microcontroller choice, peripherals, interfaces and firmware structure before you start building.
